Twig Christmas tree ideas and inspiration

I was excited to write a post about a twig Christmas tree, as styling with twigs and sticks is one of my favourite pastimes. I love foraging for flowers and foliage and regularly create displays for my home (I love it so much I recently wrote an online self-paced mini-course all about styling your home with flowers and foliage on a budget because anyone can do it if they follow my simple tips and tricks). I’m a fan of taking an alternative route for your seasonal styling and often think outside the box. A good example is my foraged Chrismas tree, where I took an old artificial tree and added foraged branches to make it look real and full.

A twig Christmas tree is an alternative to a traditional Christmas tree and is usually made from a collection of sticks or twigs shaped to form a Christmas Tree in silhouette. A twig Christmas is usually smaller than a real tree and can be made from various natural materials or bought from a shop where the range might include prelit and artificial materials.

Twig Christmas trees are popular for their rustic and natural appearance. They may come pre-decorated with lights, ornaments, or other festive elements, or they can serve as a blank canvas for you to decorate according to your preferences. These trees are versatile and can be placed on tabletops, mantels, or as part of a larger holiday display.

A twig Christmas tree is a great idea because it’s such a cost-effective way to embrace a much-loved Christmas tradition. If you collect sticks from your garden or by foraging in your local park or woods then you can make one for free. People can use their existing Christmas decorations or even make homemade Christmas decorations to use for a twig Christmas tree so it really is the perfect solution for doing Christmas on a budget.

A super simple way to make a twig Christmas tree is to forage for twigs and sticks and attach them together using a hot glue gun or floristry wire. You can tie the base together with twine, string or ribbon or you can place in a pot. Once you have the main structure you can add extra twigs to create the ‘tree’ branches and then add decorations or fairy lights. You can be as creative as you like with a DIY twig Christmas tree and make it to suit the space available and the style of your room.

Tips and tricks for making a DIY twig Christmas tree

  • Plan the height and width of your twig Christmas tree before you start collecting any twigs

  • Collect a selection of sturdy twigs for the main tree structure and some more wispy or gnarled twigs for the outer branches.

  • If you don’t have a garden with suitable twigs, go foraging in local woodland.

  • After a storm is a great time to look for fallen twigs and sticks for a twig Christmas tree.

  • Collect them through the Autumn so they are ready when you come to build your twig Christmas tree.

  • Store the collected twigs in the dry as damp or rotten twigs are useless.

  • Aim to collect a variety of sizes to help create an interesting Christmas tree shape.

  • Decide in advance how you’ll secure your twigs (glue guns and twine are reliable methods)

Can you put decorations on a twig Christmas tree?

Absolutely! One of the nice things about a twig Christmas tree is that you can decorate it to suit your tastes and be as bold or reserved as you like. You can stick to a colour theme and add Christmas bows and baubles or you could add dried rustic fruit. If you prefer a more eclectic Christmas look you could add retro baubles, embrace the blue Christmas trend or even tinsel for a twist. The only limiting factor is your imagination.

A twig tree is easy to style because it is so versatile and can be adapted to suit any Christmas theme or room style. If you favour a Scandi-style Christmas look, then add wooden and white decorations and keep the look pared back, whereas for a more maximalist approach, add lots of coloured baubles and decorations and multi-coloured lights.
